The Roman government in Jerusalem, listening to a group of fanatics in religion, delivered up to be crucified the greatest conqueror of all time. ... He was acclaimed more or less mockingly as King of the Jews. He "went about doing good." No pomp about him. No throne of gold or ivory. No palace. "The Son of man hath not where to lay his head," he declared. He was cradled in a manger. He had no earthly possessions. No earthly army was at his command. There was no navy to do his bidding. ...

And yet Jesus Christ to-day has conquered the earth more completely than any military conqueror, or any nation, since time began. Who remembers anything particular about Pontius Pilate, or any Roman ruler of the days when Christ [Jesus] was put to death? Is not the fame even of the Caesars dimmed with time? Where are the fruits of their conquests? Who bows now in homage to Alexander the Great, to Caesar, to Charlemagne, to Napoleon? They took up the sword and, in a sense, they perished by the sword. ...
