Christian Science Is Joyful

Christian Science is essentially a religion of joy; and to Christian Scientists may very aptly be applied the Biblical statement, "Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance." And why is this so? Because the very first thing one learns in Christian Science is joyful,—something full of joy,—lightening burdens, destroying fear and sin, healing sickness, supplying daily needs. It is a fundamental, joy-giving fact that the record in the first chapter of Genesis, namely, that God made man in His image and likeness and gave him dominion over all the earth, is true—is a demonstrable fact, and not an impracticable statement.

Throughout the Scriptures, joy is advocated as an important factor in the worship of God. Prophet and Psalmist dwell on the holiness of joy; and our Master and Way-shower, Jesus the Christ, promised, "Your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you."

Spiritual joy, begotten of deepest gratitude for the truth which is revealed to us through the study of Christian Science, is not boisterous; rather is it like the tranquil glow of a lamp that, constantly fed with oil and protected from drafts of wind, shines out steadily. Even as light may cheer and guide a wayfarer along his path through the night, so the Christian Scientist's steadfast joy draws the seeker to Truth with its promise of surcease from turmoil and sorrow.
