Release from Imprisoning Beliefs

Who has not at some time longed for freedom—for release from some form of imprisonment? Many are in bondage to some belief of sickness or disease, fettered by some seemingly unbreakable chain of sin; and through the indulgence of sinful thoughts and actions some have found themselves suffering the experience of actual imprisonment.

Whatever the discordant condition may be, we long for and seek freedom from our woes. Through false education and faith in matter we may seek release—healing of sickness and disease—through material so-called remedies, only to find that these are of no avail. We may chafe at and resent the bonds imposed by sin and wrongdoing, but resentment or revolt against the penalties imposed for broken law, either moral law or those regulations sanctioned by society for its protection, will not bring us release. In the right understanding of God alone is freedom to be found—freedom from sickness and disease through the realization of the allness of God, good, and of the nothingness of these errors; freedom from sin through repentance and reformation, based on the understanding that God made man like Himself, incapable of sin, and governs him.

In seeking healing through Christian Science we learn to turn our thought away from the clogging beliefs of fear, self-pity, vain regrets, or self-condemnation, and to know ourselves as in reality God's perfect children, unfallen, pure, free, the perfect reflection of God. If we would go forward, we must hold our thoughts steadfastly to this true concept of man. As wrong thinking or material belief produces the discord, so right thinking or spiritual understanding alone can reverse and destroy it. Each specific belief of error, then, must be met and overcome by conquering the wrong thoughts of fear or sin that produced it. So our problems become opportunities for taking forward steps; and each healing brought about through Christian Science in a measure destroys the seeming power of evil, and brings us nearer the final demonstration of man in the image and likeness of God.
