Compassion

What was your secret, Lord, when miracles you wrought,
The secret when victoriously you fought
All evil, or the little children caught
     Into your arms, O Lord?

What moved you, Master, when the multitudes were there
Like scattered sheep without a shepherd's care,
Or when the woman with a faith most rare
     Just touched your garment, Lord?

What but compassion laid on leprosy a hand;
What but compassion bade the palsied stand,
Or made the evil spirits flee at your command,
Or raised the dead, O Lord?

Oh, joy! still throbs to-day the Christ-compassion true!
In Christ's calm, instant way Truth breaks anew
The earthly tempests, while man's love for you
     Wipes tears away, dear Lord!

Compassion, swell our hearts, and lift in hope mankind,
And purify its gold, and for the prisoner find
A way from earthborn curse into the bliss of Mind,
The Mind of Christ, our Lord!
