Item of Interest
As this issue of the Sentinel goes to press the removal of the several departments of The Mother Church offices to their temporary quarters is being completed. Beginning with Wednesday, November 18, the regular meetings of The Christian Science Board of Directors and of the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy are held in the former room of the Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society which the latter have generously vacated for the purpose. Only the Reading Room remains at 206 Massachusetts Avenue, since its new location at 60 Norway Street has not yet been renovated. It is expected that the Reading Room will remain in its present location until about January 1. 1932.
On Monday, November 2, the demolishing of the houses on the site to be occupied by the new Publishing House was begun. It is said that this is one of the largest projects of its kind ever attempted in Boston, for about forty apartment houses, ranging in height from three to five stories, and several stores or office buildings are to be demolished. The principal office building is the six-story structure at 206 Massachusetts Avenue, heretofore used for the Church offices. With the exception of this office building, it is expected that the other structures will be razed by December 7. Work will be started demolishing the large office building January 2, and it will be completed before the month has passed.
In the process of wrecking, which is the reverse of building, the fittings, windows with sashes, and doors with frames are taken out in complete units; then the trim is ripped off, finished floors are carefully removed, plumbing and electric light fixtures all being lowered to the street by means of tackle suspended from the roofs. Next a chute from the inside conveys the débris, first the roof, the plaster and lath, etc., while the beams are lowered by tackle. The brick is separated, and is an important item of salvage.
