I should like to tell of some of the benefits I have...
I should like to tell of some of the benefits I have received through the study and application of Christian Science. When this wonderful truth found me, thirteen years ago, I was a physical and mental wreck. A great sorrow had come into my life which had almost robbed me of my reason. So great was the mental anguish that often I wanted to take my life. I also suffered from stomach trouble and had been under a doctor's care for a number of years. I was on the strictest diet, as everything I ate caused me terrible pain, and even water at times produced agony.
A dear friend, a Christian Scientist, who was visiting me and saw my suffering, knowing that it was unnecessary, asked me to try Christian Science. I reluctantly consented to have treatment and went with her to a practitioner. For a time I seemed to improve; but, being a doctor's daughter, I felt, as I was taking no medicine, that nothing was being done for me. The fear in my thought was so great that I decided to come back to the United States—I was then living in Cuba—to consult a stomach specialist. After a thorough examination he told me that my condition was very grave, and pronounced the trouble a cancerous ulcer. He told me that if I had any religion or philosophy I had better use it. The medicine he prescribed seemed to aggravate rather than alleviate my condition, and when I told him this he said there was nothing more he could do.
At this point I was stricken with intestinal influenza. This was during the fall of 1918, when the epidemic was at its height. Three eminent physicians in the city in which I lived despaired of my life. "Man's extremity" was indeed "God's opportunity" in my case; for, feeling that my time on earth was limited, I asked my husband to call a Christian Science practitioner. The practitioner came to see me and gave me a treatment. In that one treatment I was completely healed of the influenza. There was no weakness and no long period of recuperation. I felt perfectly well.
