The Standard of Christian Science

Among the innumerable blessings for which the Christian Scientist has occasion to give thanks daily is his priceless heritage of an absolute standard by which to measure all things—the standard of perfection. How great a boon it is to know that one has constantly at hand a scale which unerringly shows the true weight, a rule which measures truly, a line which sounds the depth correctly, a coin by which true worth may be indicated! Similarly, what stability and assurance has each one who counts only upon the true spiritual sense of values!

The employment of this standard can give rise to no injustice, no carping criticism. With it one sits not in unjust judgment upon his brother. Replacing "the objects of material sense with spiritual ideas," to use Mrs. Eddy's words in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 123), the student of Christian Science neither condemns nor praises from a personal standpoint. Rather, he rejects the evil and entertains the good. Wrong thoughts, fearing to submit themselves to examination by this just standard, flee away; true ideas stand to be tested before a tribunal which renders only righteous judgment. Tried and proved, these perfect ideas abide with him who thinks rightly.

At a time when the shifting nature of material standards is becoming more and more apparent to men, many are turning to spiritual Truth for guidance. Searchers after Truth cannot be satisfied by the contemplation of a world in which quantities, qualities, and values are merely relative the one to the other. They must find an absolutely true basis for conduct, a rock upon which to base each deed and thought. This rock is Christian Science, the absolute truth of being.
