Christian Science Houses in England and Wales
We are glad to announce the opening of a fund under the auspices of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, to enable needy Christian Scientists to enter Christian Science Houses in England and Wales.
It will be recalled that, in 1927, the British Parliament passed an Act to regulate the conduct of nursing homes. A clause was ultimately inserted in this Act enabling the Minister of Health to grant exemption to any nursing home which he is satisfied is being carried on "in accordance with the practice and principles of the body known as the Church of Christ, Scientist," and provided that such homes shall be known as "Christian Science Houses." A committee in London, known as the Committee on Christian Science Houses, is appointed annually by this Board to receive applications for exemption, make recommendations to the Minister of Health, and insure that such Houses as receive exemption continue to be carried on in accordance with the provisions laid down in the Act of Parliament.
We feel that the time has come when some provision of benevolence is required to enable needy Christian Scientists to obtain the care and attention these Houses afford, and it is for this reason that the fund has now been opened. It will be known as the "Benevolence Fund for aiding needy Christian Scientists to enter Christian Science Houses in England and Wales," and will be administered by the Committee on Christian Science Houses in London. Contributions may be sent to the Treasurer of The Mother Church, Mr. Edward L. Ripley, 206 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts, or to the Committee on Christian Science Houses, Donington House, Norfolk Street, Strand, London, W. C. 2, England.
