When my little girl was two years old, she fell and hurt her leg between the hip and knee, injuring the bone. This became infected, and in consequence she had eight operations in seven years. In spite of all these operations, the wound did not heal. Two consecutive years she spent in a hospital and came out no better. I also took her to several specialists, but nothing helped her.
At this time a very dear friend, a Christian Scientist, asked me to let her send a practitioner to me, so that I might try Christian Science, and I consented. I met with opposition at first because my husband was not in sympathy with Christian Science. Nevertheless I kept on hoping and believing that God would do His work; and my little girl, with the help of the practitioner, became a very ardent believer also. She became very much happier, and there was a decided though slow improvement in her general condition. The wound had not healed, however, though on two previous occasions particles of diseased bone had been eliminated.
In December, 1927, the head doctor of the School for Crippled Children, which my little girl was compelled to attend, took an X-ray of her leg and insisted upon another operation, which would have made the ninth. This was to take place immediately. We did not feel very much upset over this, as we knew we would not have that done and told the doctor so. Only two weeks later the child had a bad attack of high fever, pus was continually running from the leg, and a piece of diseased bone came out. This attack lasted three days, and on the morning of the fourth day, after a restful night, she got up and found that the sore spot which had been open for eight and a half years had closed up and was healed.
