In the Proverbs of Solomon it is written, "A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance." It is cause for great gratitude to me that Christian Scientists do reflect outwardly their spiritual peace and gladness, for it was this happiness of expression which attracted me to Christian Science.
Although physical healing was not the motive for my interest in Christian Science, we have experienced many such healings. A couple of years ago one of our little boys was stung by a scorpion, and for several hours we were face to face with possible death. But the error was routed, and shortly afterward the child was running around as actively as ever, there being no trace of exhaustion. Although I recognized the completeness of the healing, the question would sometimes obtrude itself as to what effect another meeting with a scorpion would have in the child's mind. Several weeks after this the little boy was playing in the yard with some young friends. Before long they all trooped in. My own child seemed quite indifferent, but I could tell by the dazed attitude of the others that something unusual had happened. "Mother," my boy said, "I was just stung twice by a scorpion, and it did not hurt any more than an ant." I was surely thankful for this proof of Truth's permanent healing power.
Two winters ago our younger daughter was in an automobile wreck, the car going down a bank and turning over several times. She was picked up unconscious by strangers, who rushed her to a hospital, where she was examined. The examination was unfavorable, as among other things it was thought she had concussion of the brain. We were notified and allowed to bring her home without medical treatment of any kind. Work for her was taken up in Christian Science. Within a few hours she had regained consciousness, and three days later she was back in school.
