The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS (First Church).

Lecturer: Frank Bell; introduced by Mrs. Louise Binney Smith, who said:—

Christian Science came into my own experience over thirty years ago, and since then it has sustained me in sorrow, strengthened me when in doubt or fear, and freed me from many diseases without the use of drugs or the application of any material method. On one occasion the unselfed love of a Christian Science practitioner led her to speak the word which instantaneously healed me of a painful rheumatic condition which had recurred for several winters and had made it very difficult for me to walk. In that moment I felt that something hard and uncomfortable in the hidden places of my thought had melted away, and the hard, stiff, uncomfortable bodily condition went with it. This healing took place over eight years ago, and it has been permanent and complete.

The Bible teaches that "God is no respecter of persons;" and in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 13) Mary Baker Eddy has written: "Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals." That this is a practical statement our lecturer is well qualified to explain, for he has proved it often in the many years he has practiced and taught Christian Science.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (Tenth Church).

Lecturer: Arthur P. De Camp; introduced by Mrs. Florence V. Hawley, who said:—

Christian Science heals. The testimonies appearing weekly and monthly in the Christian Science periodicals, and those given every Wednesday evening throughout the world in our churches, support this statement. Many of us here this evening could tell of sickness healed and of numerous ills overcome as a result of its healing ministrations. Many of us who have turned to Christian Science for help have done so because of some great need. The need may have been for physical health, or it may have been for mental peace, but, fundamentally, it was for a better understanding of God.

The study of Christian Science turns us at once to the Bible, and many persons have testified that, on taking up the study of Christian Science, Bibles long unused were taken down from shelves, dusted, opened, and studied. In the Bible we find that God is infinite, that He is Spirit, Life, Love, and that all that He made is good, just as Christian Science teaches; and as we learn to apply this understanding of God in our everyday lives, we are healed physically and mentally.

DELTA, COLORADO (First Church).

Lecturer: James G. Rowell; introduced by Mrs. Mayme Ambrose, who said:—

When I first became interested in Christian Science, I was a wanderer as far as religion was concerned. I was never able to form a concept of God. My understanding of Him was mortal and with this understanding I could find no harmony in the teachings of the Bible. Several years ago a little French lady came to our home, who had just found Christian Science. She was so enthusiastic over having found a demonstrable religion, that she talked of it constantly. I became interested through her faith in this religion, and when invited to attend a Sunday service I gladly accepted. The subject of the lesson was "God"; and during the reading of it there came to me a great desire to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I bought the book and began at once to study it; and for three weeks my friend and I talked of nothing else. At the end of that time I found to my joy that an old physical disability had disappeared completely; and it has never returned. That demonstration was enough to prove to me that Mary Baker Eddy's spiritual interpretation of the Bible had brought back to us the truth of the teachings of Christ Jesus. I began the study of Christian Science to satisfy a spiritual hunger, and found not only this desire fulfilled but peace and joy, and the proof of God's protection.

LONDON (Twelfth Church) and CROYDON, ENGLAND (First Church).

Lecturer: Hon. William E. Brown; introduced by Mrs. Grace M. Packer, who said:—

Christian Science has now been heard of throughout the world. Thousands of thinking men and women are studying its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and thousands are proving that its teachings are true and are bringing health and happiness into the lives of its students. Christian Science is based on the Bible and is a thoroughly practical religion. There may be some here this afternoon who are thinking as I did about sixteen years ago. I then thought that to be told "God is love" was a beautiful and wonderful theory, but that it could not be proved in practice. After I came to that conclusion, the Bible was of little or no interest to me, but I still had an underlying conviction that real happiness could be found in spite of the many evidences of sickness and sorrow. When I was told of Christian Science it was made clear to me that fear was at the root of all the trouble; and in the first few months of studying the textbook I clung to the words in the first epistle of John, "Perfect love casteth out fear." My whole outlook was changed. For the last sixteen years Christian Science has meant everything to me. It has healed me physically many times, and has kept me well. It is also healing me of many faults of character.

UPPER DARBY, PENNSYLVANIA (First Church).

Lecturer: Professor Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Frederick W. Gourlay, who said:—

It was more than thirteen years ago when in great need of physical healing, and when faced with a serious financial problem, I first turned to Christian Science for help. My relief was immediate, and in a short time both my physical and my financial needs were met. Since then Christian Science has been my only physician and help in time of trouble, and it has never failed me. What has been my experience has been the experience of thousands, yea, hundreds of thousands, of persons throughout the world, and it can be made the experience of each and every one who is here this afternoon. In II Corinthians we read these words of Paul: "Behold, now is the day of salvation;" and in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 593), its author, Mary Baker Eddy, defines "salvation" in part as "sin, sickness, and death destroyed." It is the purpose of this lecture to help us to understand and demonstrate in our own experience the scientific certainty of the present possibility of this salvation.

CLOVIS, NEW MEXICO (Society).

Lecturer: Paul Stark Seeley; introduced by Mrs. Wilma M. Sage, who said:—

A Christian Science lecture is indeed a most happy occasion, for it is through Christian Science that mankind is recognizing that salvation is not confined to the future, for freedom from sin, sickness, and sorrow may be realized now. Paul says, "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation;" but mankind had failed to catch the meaning of these words until Christian Science came, lighting the torch of spiritual understanding and leading out of the darkness of false belief into the light of Truth.

Through the study of Christian Science I have been able to lay aside glasses, which I had worn constantly for more than ten years. The specialist who examined my eyes told me I would never be able to do without them. I have received so many blessings, spiritually, physically, and financially, that I would say in the words of Isaiah, "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price."
