When a boy of fifteen I first heard the words "Christian Science."...
When a boy of fifteen I first heard the words "Christian Science." A neighbor, the mother of a large family and once an invalid, had had a complete healing through reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. At that time there were no churches or practitioners in that part of the country, and she was the only student. My parents, devout Christians, when questioned concerning this study, gave me the impression that Christian Science did not pertain to God, but was the work of the devil.
The family soon left the immediate neighborhood, but I could never quite forget the healing. Not until about fifteen years ago, however, did I again see the results of Christian Science. At that time my wife, through worry, had developed a very severe case of stomach trouble that seemed to grow worse from day to day, and even the efforts of the best doctor we knew seemed useless. A neighbor, seeing her distress, suggested help through Christian Science, and left a Sentinel for her to read. This I burned without looking at it. The lady continued leaving Sentinels, and they were all disposed of in the same way: the thought left by the parent in my childhood was still with me. But the time came when we were willing to try anything for relief. My wife called on a practitioner for a treatment and was healed. This healing meant much to me, for I was healed of prejudice and began at once to study Science and Health. From childhood I had suffered from stomach trouble and indigestion. I also had kidney trouble with intense backache. These errors, as well as many others, have been corrected through the study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's works. Through the loving help given by practitioners I have been able to overcome blood poisoning, felons, dizzy blindness, and many other erroneous conditions. Through my own efforts in realizing the truth of "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) I able to overcome all pain and ill effects when some battery acid dropped into my eye while I was working under an automobile.
While doing some work in a basement on a wet, earthen floor, I found it necessary to use an extension cord to get the light where needed. The only one available was an old one that was badly worn. While passing the wire through my hands one thumb came in contact with a bare place on the wire, and at once the body became a short circuit for the current to the ground, rendering me helpless. My first thought was to drop the wire, but finding it impossible to move my hands I tried to fall away from it. Then I realized how helpless I was, and my next thought was a prayer of two words, "My God." The coil of wire fell to the ground, and my heart overflowed with gratitude to our Father-Mother God. The thumb had a charred spot about a quarter of an inch in diameter. This pained only slightly for about an hour, and within a week the mark had disappeared.
