In 1910 I was operated upon for rupture
In 1910 I was operated upon for rupture. For three months the operation seemed to be a success; then the stitches gave way, leaving me in a worse condition than before the operation. I was compelled to wear a truss, as I was employed at a meat market where heavy lifting was required. Another physician pronounced the trouble due to "weak abdominal walls." He advised an operation and the wearing of abdominal supports. A third physician told me I had "floating kidney." I also tried two chiropractors about this time; but no good resulted from their methods. Then a fourth physician told me he would have to treat me a long time before he could help me.
By this time, seven years ago, I had given up hope of ever being well again. I gave up my work and was discouraged and depressed, but my wife and our two children were a great help to me. They seemed to foresee a bright future; and one day when in a very kind way a friend presented Christian Science to me, it appealed to me so much that I immediately consented to call upon a practitioner. I took my first treatment that afternoon, and then each day for two weeks, meanwhile studying the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. At the end of that time I was able to return to my work in the meat market after thirteen months of intermittent idleness and severe suffering. I abandoned trusses and supports, and have had no occasion to use them since that time.
About three years ago, one of my former physicians asked a relative of mine what had become of me and whether I was still living. She informed him that I was alive and well, and had been healed by Christian Science. Later this same physician examined me, by order of the Board of Health, in order that I might handle foods over the counter, as the law was that "only the physically fit" were "permitted to thus handle food stuffs." This examination showed that I was in excellent physical condition. My healing has been permanent, and I have not missed one day from business on account of illness these seven years.
