From the Field

[From a Report of the Joint Special Services Committee of the Christian Science Churches in Washington, District of Columbia]

The Joint Special Services Committee of the four branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, in Washington, District of Columbia, reports the following activities in institutions of the District of Columbia, which are attributable to a steady growth in this work for many years, and which have brought hope, encouragement, and healing to many.

Christian Science services are now conducted by the four churches in rotation each week at the District Jail; once each month at the District of Columbia Reformatory, Lorton, Virginia; District of Columbia Workhouse, Occoquan, Virginia, and the "Home for Incurables," an institution in Washington for those physically afflicted. Two years ago a Christian Science practitioner was appointed to the joint committee for work in the penal institutions. Upon the request of prisoners, he interviews those who wish to investigate Christian Science, or who take up its study and desire treatment.

Christian Science lectures are given each year in the penal institutions, are well attended, and receive good attention. The Bible, the works of Mary Baker Eddy and other authorized Christian Science literature are placed in the libraries at all of these institutions, and are used considerably.
