The letter in your issue of the seventh instant has clearly been based on a misapprehension of the teachings of Christian Science, for nothing could be farther from the truth than the critic's suggestions: (a) that Christian Science is "antagonistic to New Testament teaching," and (b) that it furnishes "a comfortable life here and now and an easy way to heaven."

In reply to (a), Christian Science reinstates primitive Christianity with its lost element of healing (see Church Manual, p. 17); and Christian Scientists all over the civilized world rejoice that they are proving with ever increasing success the truth of the words of Christ Jesus, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." Christian Science is in all respects in line with New Testament teaching.

In regard to (b), permit me to quote Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 324): "The way is straight and narrow, which leads to the understanding that God is the only Life. It is a warfare with the flesh, in which we must conquer sin, sickness, and death, either here or hereafter,—certainly before we can reach the goal of Spirit, or life in God."
