The last installment of the series of articles attacking...

San Francisco Serbian Herald

The last installment of the series of articles attacking Christian Science, which have been appearing in your paper, is so frankly biased and has been written so obviously for the purpose of venting intolerance and bigotry, that a reply would scarcely be necessary were it not for one or two particularly irresponsible statements. While these statements would be recognized immediately as slanderous by those at all acquainted with Christian Science and its adherents, they might create a misapprehension on the part of persons who but recently have come to this country from sections of the old world where Christian Science is not so well known.

Regarding the first of these statements: It is a matter of record that throughout her entire career, Mrs. Eddy, personally and as a religious leader, stood unalterably opposed to the use of tobacco and alcohol. In fact, thousands have been healed of the appetite for these through the truth taught by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.

With respect to the second statement, that a woman and her newborn infant passed on due to lack of obstetrical aid which she had not secured, owing to her belief in Christian Science: Lacking verification, this statement must be classed with other mythical statements of the critic, some of which I have shown to be erroneous in my previous letter. An additional reason, apart from the critic's bias and unreliability, why his story must be rejected in the absence of proof, is because it does not find corroboration in the experience of Christian Scientists, who are to be found in almost every community. Christian Scientists constitute a part of the normal community life in civilized countries. There are thousands of Christian Scientists in California, and I am confident that without exception their neighbors will testify that their standards of living and methods of caring for both the well and the ailing members of their households, including the care of women in childbirth, compare favorably with any group in the community.
