My husband and I have been students of Christian Science...
My husband and I have been students of Christian Science for nearly five years, and though words can never suffice to express our gratitude to God "for his unspeakable gift" and all that it has done for us and our four children, yet the least I can do is to add my testimony to all those others in our periodicals which have helped me so much, hoping that mine too may help.
I began the study of Christian Science because it had attracted the attention of my husband, and I hoped that in it we should find a common religion. An orthodox church to which I belonged had satisfied me up to that time, but it had always troubled me that we had not more in common in our religion. Looking back, it seems to me that my husband was just waiting to find the religion that would reveal the truth about God and man. A friend lent him the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and my first thought was that here, perhaps, was what we could share. But on first reading the textbook I was very much distressed to find how different it was from much I had been taught to believe in by those whom I respected and loved; and I shall always gratefully remember how gentle and unselfish my husband was with me, pointing out to me how unnecessary it was for me to change, so long as I was satisfied. It was this gentleness that made me seek the more earnestly to find all the good I could, and, coupled with the kindness of friends in lending me literature, patiently answering all my questions and allaying my doubts and fears, led me to the glad realization that we had found the "pearl of great price." Very soon we started studying the textbook and the Lesson-Sermons seriously and attending the church services and testimony meetings, and the children joined the Sunday school; and although we had not come to Christian Science for healing, before long we were to prove its healing power.
Our little son, then about four years old, had been subject to very tiresome attacks of croup, and one night he had an exceptionally bad attack, which filled me with fear. I wrapped him and gave him to my husband while I telephoned for help. The practitioner I called was away, but a member of the family most lovingly agreed to help me, and gave me this beautiful message: "Wrap him up in Love, and remember that no evil of any kind can touch him." So I got my Concordance and looked up the word "Love," and we worked for a little while. In a quarter of an hour the boy was sleeping peacefully in my husband's arms, and all the distressing symptoms of a sharp attack of croup had disappeared. I took him out the next day, and a slight return of the trouble at night was met immediately. The following day he was perfectly free. This seemed little short of miraculous to us, as on previous occasions it had often taken three weeks to get him free, with the help of medicine and the kindest attention on the part of our doctor.
