My first experience in Christian Science was the healing...
My first experience in Christian Science was the healing of my son, about seventeen years ago. He was said to be dying with pneumonia. Three physicians had done all they could, and as a last resort I called a Christian Science practitioner. I knew nothing about Christian Science, and for years had ridiculed any thought of such "mind cure," as I then called it. In answer to my request for help, the practitioner told me to rejoice. To me this was absurd! However, I had made up my mind to be obedient and, following her direction as nearly as possible, I tried to realize God as Father, as omnipotent, and therefore capable of caring for His children. I gave the little one his food and he immediately fell asleep. For seven days and nights previously he had not even been able to keep warm water in his stomach and had not slept. He slept for five hours, and although I was trying to know that God was caring for him I went many times to see if he were still alive. When he awakened he looked and acted like a different child. At the close of the third day he was completely healed. I destroyed all the medicine I had in the house, and from that time to the present we have depended wholly on God in every need. Having been a premature baby the child was very frail. He began to grow and strengthen, and now he is the picture of health and strength. We have proved many times since that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," as Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 494 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
We have learned the beautiful lesson that the material images of thought which are presented to us through the senses are not real. If we remain with the Father, as did the elder brother of the prodigal, all that He has is ours; but if we depart from the Father into the realm of mortal thinking, we shall be found in a "far country" in a state of famine. Sooner or later we shall have to arise and return to our Father, for the husks of materiality cannot bring satisfaction or happiness.
My gratitude far exceeds any expression in words. Christian Science has given me abundant supply, perfect health, and a higher sense of purity and intelligence.—(Mrs.) Hettie Louise Reynolds, Beverly Hills, California.
