In 1919 I turned to Christian Science as a last resort...
In 1919 I turned to Christian Science as a last resort and through it was healed instantaneously of a physical trouble which had given me serious difficulty for many years. Through this healing I regained the faith in God which I had lost, the false concept of God having failed me completely.
Of the many good things which have come to me since through Christian Science I should like to tell one which I hope may be a source of encouragement to others who look forward to a similar accomplishment.
Because of seeming physical and financial obstacles, I had been denied the privilege of an education beyond the grade school, but I had never ceased to desire something more, an attainment which seemed to become more and more unlikely as time passed. On every side I had met only with discouragement, from educational authorities, from those who deemed it unwise to give up a well-paying position, from those who believed it difficult of accomplishment for mature persons to acquit themselves creditably as students after years away from schoolbooks, and from others who spoke of the heavy expense of a college education. However, as I studied Christian Science and began in a measure to realize the universality of the application of its rules to all manner of problems, I perceived that the gaining of additional formal education could also be worked out in Christian Science; but because of the unsympathetic attitude I had encountered I refrained from giving further expression to the desire. This silence was a progressive step, for Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 13), "If we cherish the desire honestly and silently and humbly, God will bless it, and we shall incur less risk of overwhelming our real wishes with a torrent of words."
