Christian Science was first brought to my notice near...

Christian Science was first brought to my notice near the end of the war by a chance visitor who saw I was in dire need of help. My life was, as one doctor expressed it, "not worth living." He suggested that I should have an operation; but after considering it I refused, as I had no guaranty of its being a success. Even apart from ill health, I had no wish to go on living, because life seemed to be so difficult. In this state of mind I borrowed "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. While reading the chapter on Atonement and Eucharist, wherein Mrs. Eddy speaks of man's at-one-ment with God, I realized I had found a great truth. From that minute I gained strength and health. Since that time God has been my only physician, and every material remedy has been discarded, though prior to this all kinds of medicine and treatments had been tried. The Bible, which I had laid aside and refused to read, because I could not understand it and hardly believed it could be true, has become a source of joy and pleasure, when read with the help of our Leader's "key" to the Scriptures.

Having proved this truth to be a "pearl of great price" and a demonstrable Science, overcoming many inharmonious conditions, as well as correcting faults and failings of character, I know it can and will carry me through every discord if I apply it correctly, for the Science of Christ cannot fail. I have also proved this in business in times of seeming lack of material supply. When, according to material laws, I should have given up, I just held on to the understanding of Christian Science which I had gained, relying on the one divine Mind, God, good, to direct my ways. At all such times I have tried to know that He is "no respecter of persons," but metes out justice and love to one and all alike, and therefore that everyone I had dealings with must be governed by the one Father-Mother God. My every need was met in abundance.

Living a life of health, usefulness, and happiness, I now wish to express the gratitude I feel for our Leader's unselfish foresight in leaving us such a wonderful organization; for the patient, faithful, consecrated work done by the loving practitioners who are ever ready and willing to help us over our difficulties; for the periodicals so honestly and ably prepared, including The Christian Science Monitor, our daily newspaper, all of which are going out to help all mankind, reaching over the world and bringing all together in a better understanding of "on earth peace, good will toward men."
