About nineteen years ago, when I was in the greatest...
About nineteen years ago, when I was in the greatest need, Christian Science lifted me out of despair. At that time I was in great mental and physical distress. I was unable to digest the simplest food, and at night I had little sleep for months. I had spent several weeks in a hospital, returning home very little better; and soon afterward I had a relapse, accompanied by severe sinking spells. The attending physician had little hope of my recovery. Just at this time a friend came, and, sitting by my bedside, told me I did not have to be sick; that God did not send sickness. Then she told me of God as understood in Christian Science. Just a few sentences in all, but I slept through the night and awakened healed! I arose, dressed, and went out into the spring sunshine of what was to me a new world; and it has ever remained, through all the intervening years, a new world!
The sense of despair that was overwhelming me has never returned, however hard has seemed the road. From the beginning, enough proof has always been forthcoming to keep me striving for more of this truth. Life from then on has not appeared to be a losing struggle, but something quite the opposite. Through the daily reading of the Lesson Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly, the Bible became a new book to me, filled with promises, and I went about my house hold duties, which I had resumed, repeating these, making them my own. It was the very Word of God to me. I had read the Bible and had heard it read daily as a child, but now it was giving me the help I had always prayed that it might give me. In a few weeks I was well and gaining in weight. With this healing a long standing stomach trouble entirely disappeared. I had no treatment other than the reading of the Bible and the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
Since then I have had many physical healings, some quite wonderful. When trials and tribulations come, we know they are not from God, for "God is love." I have had proof of this in the healing of a great sorrow.
