Signs of the Times

[Rev. R. W. Barstow, as quoted in the Wisconsin State Journal, Madison]

The very essence of the Christian faith is self-discipline for the sake of service. "For their sakes," was the key phrase of all Jesus' ministries. "For their sakes" should be our slogan, as we gladly accept the limitations of our liberty. Ask any old-time social worker what was the chief source of unhappiness and poverty and ill health in the conditions which he was forced to combat, and with firm conviction based on the knowledge of experience comes the reply—liquor.

And so, said the American people some ten years ago, we will try to do away with liquor, because its use so often becomes abuse, and its influence in all ways is so detrimental. Now I ask you what should be the Christian response to this high-minded endeavor? "I want my wines and whisky. I do not overindulge. If other people make fools of themselves, it is no business of mine. I shall not permit this infringement of my personal liberties." Can you imagine Jesus taking this position? And yet the response of the Christian people, ... the disciples and followers of Jesus, will ultimately determine the outcome of this venture in social legislation.
