"Newness of life"

It is written in Proverbs that "understanding is a well-spring of life unto him that hath it;" and a psalm says that "with thee [God] is the fountain of life." There is thus a source of life; and Christian Science reveals this source to be God, and shows how spiritual understanding will enable one to draw from it. God is infinite Life, the cause, source, or origin of all life. As one understands this, he sees how erroneous it is to believe in the seeming opposite of Life as real, and perceives how mankind can be redeemed from the fallacies of mortal belief, and so enter upon a larger and happier sense of existence.

Life is infinite, without beginning and without end; and Life is Spirit. Life is therefore never in or of so-called matter. Here is a great and fundamental truth, a truth which mortals must grasp if they would be liberated from the toils of material belief and gain possession of a fuller sense of life! What does the understanding of this truth entail? Among other things, constant affirmation of the allness of Spirit and constant denial of matter; for by this means we shall "feel the divine energy of Spirit" destroying the errors, the illusions, of material belief, and ushering us into that "newness of life" after which we yearn. On page 249 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes: "Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy. Let us rejoice that we are subject to the divine 'powers that be.' Such is the true Science of being."

How great is the need of mortals for Christian Science, the Science which can instruct them correctly on the nature of true spiritual being and liberate them from the false, enervating beliefs of material sense! There are many who believe in the reality and power of matter to the extent of placing almost their entire faith in it. The result is that they become diseased and weak. And not knowing what has brought about the difficulty, they use matter in various forms in the endeavor to destroy the weakness and to produce a sense of strength. Human belief in the power of a drug may seem to produce a temporary effect, due to faith in the drug; but spiritual understanding alone is able to bestow that "newness of life" which includes health and strength, and happiness as well.
