For many years I suffered from indifferent health
For many years I suffered from indifferent health. I had five operations, but none left me strong or healthy. Appendicitis, accompanied by paralysis of the bowels, and a weak heart made me very ill. I had been on a strict diet for months, as the doctor said he did not want to operate on account of a weak heart. Then he said it was necessary, and after being in a hospital for some weeks I was sent home with a trained nurse. I was not much better, and after a little while asked the doctor when I could go back to normal food. His reply was that I must be patient for a few months more. I was very weak and despondent, and when my husband came home I told him I had no more faith in materia medica and asked him to see a friend who had spoken to us about Christian Science, and ask her what to do to get help. She gave us the address of a Christian Science practitioner, whom we consulted. I related all the above troubles to her, and she said, "My dear, eat whatever you feel inclined for." My thought was that she did not know much about it, as I suffered so much after eating. However, I felt no more ill effects after her first treatment, and within a week was also healed of constipation, from which I had suffered since a child. The heart complaint took somewhat longer, but it also disappeared.
I was not so grateful as I should have been for this wonderful healing, and after a time stopped reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Society ties seemed to call me, and I thought I would have to give up much; but thanks be to God for His wonderful love and patience, for He drew me with everlasting cords of love, and I found myself drawn back to the little book, Science and Health, which since then has been my daily companion and has brought much joy to my life.
I sprained my ankle late one Saturday afternoon, and the next evening I was running in the rain to catch a car after church. I have also been healed of rheumatism and of catarrh of the nose. In our home the pain from a severe burn was instantaneously healed while "the scientific statement of being" from the textbook (p. 468) was being repeated. In financial matters we have also been helped. I feel that the spiritual uplifting and the peace of mind I have gained are of inestimable value to me.
