The Comforter
From the very moment that humanity felt a need, its Comforter was at hand. We can say as a scientific fact that there is never a trouble, be it small or great, without a present Comforter. Why, then, comes the question, as old as human reason, are we so often comfortless? One may respond to this with other questions: Why did not Messias come as soon as mortals, by listening to the serpent of material sense, had made the Comforter necessary? Why did not Christian Science follow immediately after Christ Jesus' promise that the Comforter, which would guide us "into all truth," should come?
Are not the answers to these questions one and the same, namely, that thought had not been spiritualized sufficiently to perceive the presence of the Comforter? This being true, does not the remedy lie in expanding our thought spiritually and deepening our capacity to receive? If we will do this, the Comforter will come to us and abide with us. To the prepared consciousness, the Holy Ghost comes with power, pouring in blessings, their abundance being according to one's capacity to receive.
Every Christian Scientist fully accepts Mrs. Eddy's statement that the Comforter is Divine Science, which, in its application to humanity, she has termed Christian Science. (See Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 55 and 127.)
