About twelve years ago I began an intermittent study of Christian Science, and although I did not seem to grasp the truth firmly or with much apparent understanding, I was aware of healings from time to time. The necessity for eyeglasses, also chronic indigestion and constipation, disappeared without having any special work done for them. As my understanding of God and His law has grown I have realized this result to have come about from that honest desire for Truth which our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us is prayer.
Then came the breaking down of another form of mesmerism, namely, the belief that social activities necessitated social drinking. This false belief is so utterly destroyed that no human sense of personality can again make this phase of error seem attractive to me. Painless childbirth, where many so-called mortal laws had to be broken down, was also experienced.
A few years ago fallen arches were instantaneously healed by the sudden clear realization that relying on arch supports was not "leaning on the sustaining infinite," to use Mrs. Eddy's words on page vii of the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." The supports were removed at once, but it was not until several days later that it was joyfully realized the condition was completely healed. I was greatly uplifted at the time of the healing of a badly sprained ankle. In less than a week conditions, almost terrifying to material sense, were overcome to the extent that practically all swelling was gone, and the discoloration quickly disappeared. All pain had subsided within an hour or so after the accident. This particular healing meant a great deal to me, as it was the result of my own growth in spiritual understanding; and as this is the great desire of all earnest Christian Science students, we can and should rejoice in all proofs of progress.
