Christian Science is a spiritual religion in which the healing of sickness and sin by spiritual means is fundamental. It is the renaissance of primitive Christianity, and its spiritual method of healing is based upon the teachings of Christ Jesus, to whom Mrs. Eddy refers (Manual, p. 41) as "the Ensample in Christian Science."

The Master utilized the power of God, divine Truth and Love, to heal all types of disease, and he did not use drugs for healing, nor did he rely on "common consent" or call on physicians to aid him in his work. Since the followers of Mrs. Eddy employ the spiritually mental method that was used by Christ Jesus, it is clear that they are not dependent on collective human thought to cure sin or disease, nor do they take drugs or call on physicians for healing. Mrs. Eddy expected her followers to turn unreservedly to God for healing, for she says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 167), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized."

However, Christian Scientists have only a kindly feeling toward members of the medical profession. This attitude is consistent with Mrs. Eddy's teaching that "a genuine Christian Scientist loves Protestant and Catholic, D. D. and M. D., — loves all who love God, good; and he loves his enemies" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 4).
