Signs of the Times

[Rev. Abbot Peterson, as quoted in the Boston Evening Transcript, Massachusetts]

There was another life of Christ [Jesus] beside that set down for us by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John — "an unwritten gospel" — his life of communion with God in the companionship of the Spirit. Even his closest disciple could not penetrate to the inner privacy of his devout aspiration, nor record what went on in the central solitude of his soul.

In our own case, also, there is, in addition to the outward record of our lives, an unwritten gospel, a wordless chronicle of our spiritual aspiration. Our true life is that inner life. There, guarded from all intrusion, our higher potentialities have their chance for growth, and man, in the words of James Russell Lowell, has his opportunity "inwardly in secret to be great."
