With an earnest desire for a better understanding of the Scriptures, in order that I might give to a Bible class more than I was able to give them at that time, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was studied, and I found on reading the first chapter that Christian Science was the whole truth and just what I needed and had prayed for. I did not need it at the time for physical conditions, but I devoured the book earnestly.
My first demonstration in Christian Science was made unknowingly and with but little effort, by overcoming hatred and harsh words through learning to love my enemies and by doing good to those who hated me. For this first demonstration I have been very grateful.
About four years ago, blood poisoning developed in the palm of my right hand. As it developed so suddenly, I did not feel able to cope with the situation and called a Christian Science practitioner for help. This was lovingly and faithfully given, with the result that I suffered very little pain. About a week later, however, the condition of my hand and arm seemed, from a material standpoint, very serious, and affected all parts of my body. While I was lying down the crisis came, but I knew it to be error at its worst and was able to laugh at it as I lay there, declaring the truth. In less than an hour I was up and out again. During the next twelve hours the poison passed off through the bowels; but the flesh from inside the hand and parts of the fingers and thumb seemed to be being eaten away. During this time a practitioner gave me much help and encouragement. One citation from Science and Health (p. 463), "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive," and the twentieth to twenty-second verses of the fourth chapter of Proverbs, were of much help to me, and the healing was rapid from that time.
