In the year 1918 I came to Christian Science for physical healing. I had been suffering for days with pains in the back of my head and the left ear. The physician declared it would be necessary to make an incision, as a pus sac had formed which might cause serious trouble. I dreaded the thought of this operation and at the invitation of a friend I called upon a Christian Science practitioner for help. Within an hour after that call was made the pain ceased and I was completely healed.
I was very grateful for this healing, but did not realize the spiritual significance of Christian Science treatment and healing at that time. I purchased a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but read it very little the year immediately following its purchase. At the end of that time I again called for help from a practitioner, who patiently and lovingly pointed out the way. I was told that I needed to study the Bible and our textbook to learn more about God. This I began to do. In Science and Health (p. 261) Mrs. Eddy says: "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." This truth has proved to be very helpful. Previous to this I had been a frequent sufferer from sick headaches, catarrhal colds, declared to be hereditary, tonsillitis, sore throat, extreme sensitiveness, quick temper, false pride. I am most grateful to affirm that for over nine years I have been free from all of these and Christian Science has been my only physician.
Christian Science has been my refuge and "a very present help in trouble." It has been my comfort and defense. In sorrow it has enabled me to remain "undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses" (ibid., p. 306). Since I began the study of Christian Science the truths in the Bible have meant much more to me than previously, and I am getting more and more of their spiritual interpretation. I am most grateful for the many and unceasing manifestations of good which I am receive through the study of this wonderful truth; for the understanding it has given me of God, infinite good, and of man made in His image and likeness, perfect as the Father is perfect.
