[Written for the Sentinel]

Pentecost

Thou living light of pentecostal glory,
Lo! wide we fling our hampering doors of clay;
Thy cleansing fires pour through us we implore Thee,
To purge and sanctify our hearts to-day.

Thou purity, ineffable and holy,
Thy stainless radiance do Thou so impart
That Thy reflection we, albeit lowly,
May flash the glory on from heart to heart,

Till all the world shall see Thy love-light shining
Through lucent lives of men, a countless host,
And all shall learn to know Thee, God, enshrining
Thy priceless pearl of gifts, the Holy Ghost.

What far horizons bright shall we, perceiving,
Attain without a taint of sin's alloy;
What fearless flights of spiritual achieving
Shall lift our lives to pinnacles of joy.

And so shall all the bells of heaven be ringing
Glad peals o'er all mankind emergent then,
And so shall all the earth rejoice with singing,
The Lord omnipotent doth reign—Amen!
