I read with interest an article in the News of Thursday last dealing with those who adopt the role of sympathy seeker. The conclusion reached was that in the final analysis the basis was selfishness; and Christian Science was instanced as an illustration of the wisdom of discouraging the contemplation of evil, sickness, and woe.

While appreciating the kindly reference to Christian Science, I would point out that the writer of the article either failed to express her meaning clearly or has repeated a popular misconception of Christian Science teaching in her unqualified statement that its essence "lies in the denial of all evil and sickness."

In the absence of the explanation that Christian Science denies the reality (as a creation of God) of sin and sickness, the statement would imply a kind of blind refusal to accept something unpleasant in the hope of making one's self believe what one would prefer to believe—a kind of self-deception. This is, however, the very antithesis of Christian Science, which is permeated by true sympathy and loving helpfulness.
