Christian Science came where I was during a time of...

Christian Science came where I was during a time of physical and mental turmoil. It was during the great war. My husband was at a training camp, and I was working in Washington, District of Columbia, when I was seized with Spanish influenza. After an attempt to get well through medical treatment, I asked a dear friend for help in Christian Science. Although I knew practically nothing of Christian Science myself, I had great confidence in her, though she had been interested in it only a short time, because she had lived through some very difficult experiences; and I thought that if she believed in Christian Science, there really must be something in it. I had been ill for five days with the intestinal form of influenza and a high fever, when I appealed to her. The day after that, my temperature was normal; and the following day I was sitting up.

I began at that time to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and by clinging to the glorious statements of truth in that book I was able, thirteen days from the time I was first stricken, to visit my husband in camp, under conditions trying to even the most hale and hearty. During this visit I was free from a sense of fear, and there were no ill effects. On the contrary, I went back to my work immediately afterward. The more people I met who had been similarly afflicted, the more I realized the tremendous significance of my healing. Since that time I have had numerous other healings, physical and mental, and through the understanding of Truth, healings have been brought about for others.

Words are inadequate to express my gratitude for Christian Science, for the priceless sense of our oneness with the Father. To do my part in bringing to suffering humanity the vision of "the beauty of holiness," a sense of that Love that "never faileth" and which "healeth all thy diseases," is my dearest wish. Since, as our Leader tells us, "the question, What is Truth, is answered by demonstration,—by healing both disease and sin" (Science and Health, Pref., p. viii); this is "the way" in which we follow the Master.
