Mental Energy

ON page 394 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "By conceding power to discord, a large majority of doctors depress mental energy, which is the only real recuperative power." Suffering acutely, a young student of Christian Science sought relief during a noon hour in one of the Christian Science Reading Rooms in a large city. The pain seemed so severe that she found it impossible to read. The thought of the shortness of the time she had to give to study, and of the large amount of work to be accomplished that afternoon, added to her distress. Miserable and comfortless, she sat for a time; then suddenly she realized that she did not have to endure suffering of any kind. Although the pain was unabated, she arose determinedly and placed her book on the table, declaring emphatically to herself that matter had no power to make her miserable and that as her real self was the image and likeness of God, she had full dominion over pain. Further, she decided to take whatever time was necessary to see a practitioner, to have help in claiming her rightful dominion. With decision and energy she moved toward the door; but as she opened it, she realized that the pain had left her and she was healed.

By conceding power to discord had come depression and discouragement; but simultaneously with the realization of the powerlessness of discord to enslave the children of God, came hope and the energy necessary to master the situation. In the paragraph already quoted from Mrs. Eddy writes,

"Knowledge that we can accomplish the good we hope for, stimulates the system to act in the direction which Mind points out."
