"The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined," we read in Isaiah. I was indeed dwelling in darkness when Christian Science found me. I had reached a place in my experience where materiality had failed me; and I wandered wearily, as sheep without a shepherd. I shall never forget the joy I experienced when the great light of Christian Science first dawned in my consciousness. It was as though a great load had fallen from me, and with it came an instantaneous healing.

For years I had been a sufferer from nervous indigestion, with attendant complications of heart trouble, constipation in its worst form, piles, hemorrhoids, extreme gastritis, constant pain in the side, nervousness, irritability, and mental depression. After faithful but unsuccessful efforts to help me, my home physician sent me to a neighboring city for an examination. There the physician, a specialist, said I must undergo an operation, or my body would be drawn gradually to one side; and he sent me to one of the best food specialists on the western coast. After many and varied examinations, I was placed in a sanitarium for an eight-day food test, and I followed the diet prescribed for one month, but went back to the physician much worse than before. After further examination the diet was changed, and I was given a letter to the home physician saying there was nothing for me but the knife. I did not deliver this letter, however, but stayed very religiously by the new diet for almost a year without improvement.

While I was in this irritable condition, there came a misunderstanding with some dear friends. This made me so unhappy that I could hardly eat or sleep for two weeks. In my sorrow I turned for help to the minister of the church of which I had been an active member for nineteen years, but not receiving the relief I sought I was led to buy "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I was very deeply prejudiced against what I thought Christian Science to be, and after reading for a short time I put the book away.
