The Next Step
IN Christian Science there is always a next step to be taken.
It may be a long one or a short one; it may be an easy one or one not so easy; but it must always be a forward step. Walking in a circle only makes to-day's starting point tomorrow's destination; and while others may be satisfied to revolve, it is for us to advance. He who steps forward in Christian Science is not only leaving error behind but is drawing closer to the source of all that is eternally good. He is seeing more clearly and doing better; health becomes his companion and happiness his team mate.
While each step forward brings its fruition visible and invisible, direct and indirect, we must keep on stepping. He who stands still is waiting while error overtakes him, and usually he does not have to wait very long. It is not enough that he has made several good demonstrations: he must strive to make more. One difficulty with many Christian Scientists is that they do not seem to recognize that to gain more they must apply more persistently and assiduously what they have already acquired. Christian Science is a tool to be used, not merely a picture to be admired and talked about. It is to live by, not only to live with. Outward conformity with its teachings is not enough : we must shape our thinking in the molds it provides. If what we use does not strengthen character, elevate ideals, and impart nobler aspirations, then we need more of it, or need to apply more earnestly, persistently, and intelligently what we have. Christian Science is Truth applied, not merely Truth possessed. Divine Love has minted coins of surpassing value, and has provided them bountifully for us all. Our Leader has shown us how to invest them where they will bear good interest and be safe for all time; but if we bury them, we should not complain if our income dwindles.
