Solving Church Problems

In dealing with the problems of branch churches, great help is always to be had from the study of what Mrs. Eddy has said in her various writings. On page 77 in the Manual of The Mother Church, for instance, we find the following: "God requires wisdom, economy, and brotherly love to characterize all the proceedings of the members of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist."

To Christian Scientists "wisdom" has a meaning above that associated with it in the worldly human mind. To them wisdom is the substance of spiritual understanding; and to practice economy is to utilize in loving obedience all they have at their command of this substance. Where divine Love governs, however great the human expenditure may seem to be, there is no waste; for waste means failure to make use of the resources at hand, as much as it means, humanly speaking, an over use of whatever there may be of supply. The greatest success in the business world is secured by that enterprise whose management is wise enough to know that there is no economy in evading an expense which is necessary to the prosperity of the business. Such management would esteem as waste any attempt to economize by the saving of money when wisdom informed it that money should be spent.

In church work, true economy gives expression to and utilizes the spiritual wisdom and understanding of the collective thought of the membership. Every member of the church desires the prosperity of the church, and is honestly interested to know the method best to pursue that the fruits of Spirit may be realized in the fullest measure, in order that the church may perform the service to which it has been called at the present period of human enlightenment.
