Nearly twenty-six years ago Christian Science came to me as a direct answer to prayer. I had long and earnestly prayed for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and Christian Science came to me as an answer to that prayer, though it was not till years afterwards that I recognized how direct the answer had been.
It was not the search for physical healing that brought me to Christian Science, but the search for a demonstrable knowledge of God. I had been brought up in a Christian home, and from childhood had learned to love the Bible; and even as a boy I began to enter into Christian work, to which, later, with the study of the Bible, I devoted all my spare time. On several occasions I preached vehemently against Christian Science, only to learn that it was not Christian Science I had preached against, but my own misconception of it. Now I know that there is not a man, woman, or child in the world who, if he really knew what Christian Science is, would not seek for it with all his heart.
My study of the Bible was along independent lines, and I did not follow any recognized school of thought. I studied the Bible for itself, and to learn what its own language taught, as distinct from what others said about it; and before I knew that there were others who had similar thoughts, I became satisfied that if the Bible was true there was healing for the sick in Christianity, as well as salvation from sin. I saw, too, that the Bible clearly taught that material things are unreal, and that spiritual things are real; and that even death itself is conquerable. The language of the Bible could mean nothing else.
