Christian Science is not an invention of the human mind, as might be inferred from the comments in your recent issue. On the contrary, Christian Science is a spiritual discovery of the divine laws underlying the teachings and works of Christ Jesus. For many years Mary Baker Eddy had been a consecrated student of the Bible, and when she was so seriously injured in an accident that it was considered fatal by the physicians, she turned to her Bible, opening it at Matthew 9:2. Through the insight she there received of Christian Jesus' spiritual method of healing, Mrs. Eddy was instantaneously healed. She thereafter always enjoyed better health. This experience turned Mrs. Eddy more than ever to the Bible. For several years she searched it to find the unvarying rule underlying spiritual healing; and by applying her discovery, she healed others of serious organic and functional diseases. What could be more scientific than this proof that Mrs. Eddy furnished of the laws underlying Christ Jesus' healing work?
After thus proving her discovery in an unquestionable manner, Mrs. Eddy published the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which contains the full statement of Christian Science. Through studying this book, great numbers have been healed of serious illness, thus showing the natural healing effect of spiritual law. Anyone who faithfully follows the Christian teachings set forth in this book can heal himself and others of sickness and sin through the same spiritual law. What procedure could be more scientific than this? All truly scientific students must study to rise above the evidence of the material senses; for these senses are constantly being proved unreliable, as when they testify that the sun sets in the west, and that parallel lines meet in the distance. The student of Christian Science looks beyond sense-testimony; and since he finds that the teachings of Christian Science do not agree with the material senses regarding the unreality of evil and matter, is it not wiser to question the evidence of these senses, and to study more diligently to understand the spiritual law which transcends them? Is not this a better procedure than to attempt to bring the spiritual teachings of Christ Jesus into subjection to the misleading material senses? If this procedure were followed, it would be seen that Christian Science is both Christian and scientific, that Christ Jesus' teachings are perfect and unlimited in scope, and that Mrs. Eddy's discovery of them is complete.
