In a recent issue a doctor places Christian Science under the category of the various methods of healing "by the mind," such as mesmerism, hypnotism, hynotic suggestion, Couéism, spiritualistic healing, et cetera. We should be glad if you will allow us the courtesy of your columns to say that Christian Scientist do not accomplish the healing works through any belief in the power of the so-called human mind, but solely and entirely through the understanding of the prayer which asks and expects that "thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." They understand God's will to be the changeless truth about creation, which has existed throughout eternity, though hidden to mortal view. That this truth should be discerned and practiced in the destruction of the evils of the world Christ Jesus promised in those immortal words: "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
In their healing practice, Christian Scientists reach out for unseen spiritual verities, the fundamental facts of existence, always at hand and awaiting recognition. They are proving in some measure that transformation by the renewing of the mind takes place, disease and sin are healed, proportionately as divine ideas are revealed to human consciousness. They heal the sick not through suggestion or any other method of the human mind, but on the basis of the recognition that the evils of the flesh do not exist as realities, but as impositions, having neither origin nor support in Deity; and through the perception of the glorious, everlasting facts of creation, of God and of man in His image and likeness, freedom from an illegitimate bondage is won. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, writes on pages 231 and 232 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Man, governed by his Maker, having no other Mind,—planted on the Evangelist's statement that 'all things were made by Him [the Word of God]; and without Him was not anything made that was made,'—can triumph over sin, sickness, and death."
