[Written for the Sentinel]

Lord, Is It I?

"And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me. And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I?"—Mark 14:18, 19.

They that did sit and eat with Jesus there
On that sad passover in distant time
Were such as I and all who sojourn here—
Eager like Peter, or like Philip groping;
Like Thomas doubting; vain like James and John
Once long before, thinking he 'd favor them above the rest.
From the full gamut of frail human stuff
Chose he those twelve to chasten and make free.
