It is with a great sense of gratitude that I add my testimony of mental and physical healing to that of so many others who have been healed through the truth as revealed by Christian Science. My healing has been slow and has come about through the overcoming of self in a measure. A critical physical condition was preceded by months of mental anguish and extreme nervousness, following overwork, war strain, and adversity, and was accompanied by despondency. I was struck down, my body becoming distorted and my side crippled with what at first was believed to be rheumatism. Later, it was claimed that a series of mental shocks had affected the nerves of my back. This was accompanied by internal disorders, acute kidney trouble, and a slight stroke. For several months I was confined to my bed helpless, and for several more months to a chair. It seemed, if I ever walked again, that I would be hopelessly lame.
I never ceased to cling to Christian Science during this testing time. I was fortunate in being placed finally in a dear Science home, where I had opportunity to read and study many hours a day, and to rest. Excruciating pain, which is ordinarily relieved by constant hypodermics, responded slowly to the truth. Gradually, with the help of a loving and patient practitioner, I was able to walk—at first a block, by resting constantly; but I was still quite lame, my left limb having contracted until it was at least four inches shorter than the right.
As several members of my family had become cripples through various causes, I had the claim of heredity to master. As my distorted thinking responded to the truth and was replaced by the attributes of God; as I learned to look beyond the manifestations of matter, and to get free of fear, human will, lack, and ignorance, I regained my mental peace and a normal body. This demonstration took ten months. Two months after I started to make the daily effort to walk, at first with considerable pain, I was walking without effort twelve blocks a day to my work in a position which had come to me without seeking. I was able to carry on for six months immediately thereafter, with no sign of physical defect or fatigue, a strenuous publicity campaign at an exposition where sixty thousand people were accommodated daily. Since then I have not had the slightest return of the difficulty. I am actively engaged in business, and am better mentally and physically than I ever have been.
