Obedience
Without obedience there can be no success in any department of life. Did not the Master give us lesson after lesson in obedience? How full the Bible is of the necessity and importance of obedience; as for instance when Paul tells us that we are to bring "into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ"!
Christian Scientists know and declare continually that Mrs. Eddy has through revelation given back primitive Christianity to the world, in a way in which it can be demonstrated or practiced by all. All Christian Scientists know that Mrs. Eddy was divinely inspired when she wrote the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and her other writings, and they would all agree that obedience to what she has written and taught is essential if they are to be successful in their demonstration of Christian Science.
Our revered Leader never expected any of her followers to give mere blind obedience to a person. Mrs. Eddy was always endeavoring to turn students and followers away from person to divine Principle, or God. Did she not write, "Follow your Leader, only so far as she follows Christ" (Message of The Mother Church for 1902, p. 4)? Since Mrs. Eddy was divinely inspired, her followers recognize the importance of the strictest obedience to whatever she has written. It will be recalled that a certain clergyman once expected to go and see Mrs. Eddy and that she replied (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 120), "Those who look for me in person, or elsewhere than in my writings, lose me instead of find me."
