Both in reading testimonies in the Journal and the Sentinel...
Both in reading testimonies in the Journal and the Sentinel and in hearing them at our Wednesday evening meetings, I have many times been healed of idle thinking; and through this healing I am learning to walk with God and not away from Him. I am learning to know Him here and now as I never thought it possible to know Him, for one of my old and most stubborn beliefs had been that it was only through death and in some future existence we could ever attain to spiritual understanding.
It is with joy and thanksgiving I have found, through the constant practice of Christian Science, that God is ever at hand, and that as my consciousness rises out of the mist of mortal belief into spiritual understanding the Scripture is fulfilled, "Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee." In my case it seemed as if progress really began when the lesson of giving was learned. The income seemed so tiny, the impulse to give so great, that they seemed out of all proportion to each other. With fear and trembling was the first bill placed in our plate collection one Sunday. The following week an order came to my studio which covered many times the amount given. This seems such a tiny step, but it brought the understanding that God's laws are directly opposite to human laws. This understanding made it possible to subscribe for our publications as time went on, and to learn the great lesson that "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."
My first physical healing was that of my eyes and release from wearing glasses. This healing came while reading our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, from cover to cover, when I first became interested in Christian Science. It was indeed an incentive to further study, and above all to practice.
