I became interested in Christian Science through the reading of an article in a Christian Science Sentinel handed to me by a friend. The title of the article was, "Know Him [God] and be at Peace." I knew at once that this was my need. I had been taught to love God and to read my Bible and pray, for which I am grateful to my parents. But what a great joy came to me when a clearer understanding of God, as Love, as ever present, as all-power, as divine Principle, was made clear! I never doubted the truth of that article for one minute.
Just at that time I was confronted with varicose vein ulcers. Here was a chance to prove the truth; but my husband felt I must have the best medical help, although he was very willing that I should have all the Christian Science literature I wanted. Three of the immediate family, who were in the practice of medicine in Chicago, held a consultation and declared the case to be the worst of its kind they had ever seen. I asked how long it would be before I might have relief from the terrible agony I was suffering. The reply was, "It will be a year at least."
Again I asked to be allowed to try Christian Science and was told that if it were a nervous condition or a mental condition there would be no objection; but how could Christian Science restore lost tissue? I consented to medical treatment and never failed to obey every direction given by the physicians, but I grew steadily worse, although I knew they were most lovingly trying to give me help. Finally, a surgeon of considerable fame was called in, and the declared the case incurable—too late for amputation, as the heart was too weak; and so all hope seemed at an end from a material standpoint. During all of this time my Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy were with me constantly, and as I imbibed the spiritual truths contained in these books the pain would cease; but the body was not healed. After the physicians said there was no hope, I turned away from every material remedy prescribed, removed every bandage, and asked to be left entirely alone.
