God's Opportunity
Freedom from the evil besetting him is provided in Christian Science for the one in trouble who has exhausted every material resource in his efforts to find relief. This protection from disaster has been experienced by those who have endeavored to follow the teachings of this Science. Through the understanding gained in its study and practical application, many have learned to stand in the face of threatening evils, realizing that their only real support and protecting power at all times is God.
"Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day," declared Moses to the children of Israel on the shore of the Red Sea, when their destruction seemed nigh. The Pharaoh were at their heels, men trained in war and probably having the most up-to-date weapons of the period. But the Israelites were trained in the arts of peace, most of them being unprepared to cope in a material way with their former masters. What were they to do? Physical resistance seemed futile. Their way of escape was cut off by the yawning chasm of the Red Sea. Help must come from another source. If not, they would be speedily annihilated or returned by the Egyptians to their former state of bondage and humiliation, probably to have the bonds drawn tighter about them. "Man's extremity is God's opportunity." Moses knew that the only real salvation for anyone at any time is an understanding of God; and in his extremity he turned to God and directed his followers to do likewise.
The salvation of that downtrodden people was right there before them, even though the evidence of the physical senses was strongly to the contrary. They did not know it until Moses told them. He knew it—knew it so well that the way was opened for them through the sea, which before had been to them an impassable barrier. And they marched through to safety. Spiritual truth had revealed to Moses that God was with them in the place where they saw only a deep sea with no means of transportation to the opposite shore.
