Christian Healing

On page 55 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "The time for the reappearing of the divine healing is throughout all time; and whosoever layeth his earthly all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ's cup now, and is endued with the spirit and power of Christian healing." Mrs. Eddy's words are being proved true to-day by Christian Scientists the whole world over; for it is indisputable that healings, healings of all kinds of sin and disease, are continually taking place through Christian Science practice.

Now this should be cause for rejoicing to all Christians. For was it not this healing element which had apparently been lost for so long from Christianity? The healing of sin had always been considered an integral part of Christian practice, but not since about the end of the third century, probably, had the healing of disease been considered a necessary part of that practice. Why it should have been so it is difficult to say, since unquestionably the Founder of Christianity, Christ Jesus, healed the sick as well as the sinning in his practice, and instructed his immediate followers to go into all the world and do as he had done. And Biblical history records that those early disciples of the Master obeyed him.

It may be argued that there have been those living between primitive Christian times and our own day who have healed disease through spiritual means; and the fact cannot be denied. But it is also true that the healings which were performed by these spiritually-minded people were exceptional rather than the rule. And what does this indicate? That they lacked something; that they needed something more than the magnificent faith which they possessed; that they did not have the spiritual understanding of God and His real creation, man, which would have enabled them to heal scientifically.
