Continuous Understanding
Nothing regarding the why and wherefore of mankind is more definite, or more conclusive than that each person is to a very great extent the apparent product of his own thinking. Human thought during recent years is beginning to accept this; so that it is now somewhat easier for mankind to turn from merely mortal thinking and begin to grasp the meaning of the real man's identity as the spiritual idea, or the complete and perfect reflection, of infinite Mind, God. That is to say, the individual, spiritual, real man is discerned through spiritual understanding—through right thinking.
This being true, it is obvious that the disclosure of man's real identity is dependent upon growth in spiritual understanding, or true thinking. But how is this to be accomplished? Not by forcing, or by willing, or by any of the customary human methods of concentration, but by humbly and simply and continuously opening consciousness so as to let God's spiritual ideas, or thoughts, manifest themselves, after the manner which Christian Science teaches. "Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts."
In order that this thinking may be permitted to rule within us, we must discard material beliefs, which are but the seeming opposites of true ideas. This means that we must continuously be on guard against the only devil that can even claim to have existence, namely, mortal beliefs or concepts. As the editor of a newspaper should be a kind of sentinel, allowing to pass into the paper good news only, to the exclusion of the bad, so should one's attitude be to his own mental make-up.
