Marylebone Mercury
In reply to a clergyman, writing in your recent issue, let me say that the infinitude of God must include infinitude as to power, for God is omnipotent; infinitude with regard to presence, for God is omnipresent; infinitude with regard to intelligence, for God is omniscient. God is All-in-all, and there is no other self-existence. There is nothing pantheistic about God and His creation, for He is infinite Spirit, and His creation is spiritual. Christian Science does not teach that the material world is the creation of Spirit. That like produces like is an eternal fact. The so-called material universe is a false sense of the real spiritual universe. It is the view the carnal mind takes of all real things in contradistinction to the spiritual viewpoint of the Mind of Christ. Hence the necessity of gaining the divine Mind before one can discern the spiritual universe. As Paul says, "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."
The clergyman argues for the reality of evil as well as of good. Does he not see that if evil is as real as good, it must proceed from God, for He is the only creator? Christian Science teaches that evil is suppositional, for it is the supposed absence of God, good, who is omnipresent. Christ Jesus came to destroy the devil (evil) and its works. This he did; and he bade his followers do likewise. Spiritual understanding brings with it the capability of reasoning correctly. When one has gained some measure of spiritual understanding of the teachings of Christ Jesus, and is thereby enabled to heal the sick and reform the sinner, one is in a position to discern that Christian Science is the philosophy of Jesus.
