Christian Science was first brought to my attention as a...
Christian Science was first brought to my attention as a means to help others. For several years I had been perplexed at the utter helplessness of mankind to avoid poverty, disease, and disaster. I had for years hoped to relieve mankind of some of its misery by serving on a charity board and through welfare work. Finally, this was seen to be only temporary aid; and I became much discouraged, disappointed, and weary.
At that time I was asked by a member of my family to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The request was accepted, since this loved one was in great need. While reading the book mentioned, trying to understand what it contained that would relieve this dear one, I was healed of chronic appendicitis, for which an operation had been suggested, as there was likely to occur an acute attack at any time. Headaches, bilious attacks, and weariness, discouragement and disappointment, simply dropped away, because I was convinced I had found not only the way to temporary relief, but the way of permanent healing. After a few week's study a broken toe was healed in twelve hours, with only a slight discoloration, which disappeared within the day. The healing of a fractured ankle took place in an hour. Through the loving help of a Christian Science practitioner, pneumonia was overcome in a week. Many other healings could be related, for Christian Science does heal.
Here I am reminded of our revered Leader's words in Science and Health (pp. 348, 349), "If such are the present fruits, what will the harvest be, when this Science is more generally understood?" As this understanding is gained, "precept upon precept; line upon line," I rejoice, since every right thought brings not only healing of physical disease, but also the transforming of thought, whereby the rule of right action, conduct, and development is attained.
